How to Clear a Clogged Drain, and When to Call a Plumber

A slow or blocked drain is one of those problems every homeowner runs into sooner or later; the kitchen sink that won’t empty, the shower that turns into a shallow pool, the bathroom sink that gurgles when you brush your teeth. Most clogs start small and simple, but in older Cleveland homes with decades-old pipes, a “simple” clog can also be a sign of something bigger going on further down the line.

Start Here: Safe DIY Methods

Boiling water. For a kitchen sink slowed by grease or soap scum, carefully pour boiling water down the drain in two or three stages, letting it work for 30 seconds between pours. This is often enough to melt through minor grease buildup.

Baking soda and vinegar. Pour about a half cup of baking soda down the drain, follow with a half cup of vinegar, and let it fizz for 10–15 minutes before flushing with hot water. It’s not magic, but the reaction can help loosen light buildup in the pipe walls.

A plunger. A standard sink plunger (not a toilet plunger) works well on sinks and tubs. Make sure there’s enough water in the basin to cover the plunger’s rubber cup, block any overflow opening with a wet rag, and plunge firmly several times.

A drain snake or zip-it tool. These inexpensive tools are great for hair clogs in bathroom sinks, tubs, and showers, by far the most common culprit. Feed it in, twist, and pull out the debris directly rather than pushing it further down the line.

Clean the P-trap. If the clog is right under a sink, the curved pipe (P-trap) beneath the basin is often the culprit. With a bucket underneath to catch water, you can usually unscrew it by hand or with pliers, clear it out, and reattach it.

What to Avoid

Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They’re tempting because they’re fast, but we’d steer you away from them, especially in older Cleveland homes with aging galvanized or cast iron pipes. Those chemicals generate heat and corrosive reactions that can damage worn pipe walls and seals over time, sometimes turning a minor clog into a leak or a pipe that needs replacing.

Don’t force a stubborn clog. If a plunger or snake isn’t budging it after a few honest attempts, forcing the issue (or reaching for a second bottle of chemical cleaner) is more likely to cause damage than clear the blockage.

Signs It's More Than a Simple Clog

Sometimes a “clogged drain” isn’t really about one drain at all. Watch for these signs that point to a bigger issue in your main sewer line:

  • Multiple drains backing up at once. If your toilet, tub, and sink all seem slow or gurgling around the same time, the blockage is likely further down the line, not in any one fixture.
  • Recurring clogs in the same spot. A drain that clears temporarily and clogs again within days often has a partial blockage or buildup that DIY methods aren’t fully reaching.
  • Gurgling sounds from other fixtures when you run water or flush, a sign of a venting or main line issue.
  • Slow drainage throughout the house, not just in one sink or tub.
  • Sewage odors coming from drains, which can indicate a blockage or a break in the line.

In older, tree-lined neighborhoods across Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Lakewood, tree root intrusion into sewer lines is a common cause of these recurring, whole-house symptoms, and it’s not something a bottle of drain cleaner or a hand snake is going to fix.

When to Call a Plumber

If you’ve tried the basics and the clog keeps coming back, if more than one drain is affected, or if you’re just not sure what you’re dealing with, it’s time to bring in a professional. A plumber has access to tools homeowners typically don’t, like drain cameras and hydro jetting equipment, that can identify exactly what’s causing the blockage and clear it without risking damage to older pipes.
