You Received a Notice from the City Requiring Backflow Testing
Municipalities across Greater Cleveland send annual testing notices to property owners with backflow prevention devices on file. If you’ve received one of these notices, you’re required to have the device tested by a certified tester and submit results before the deadline. Northeast Plumbing handles the testing, the report, and the city filing, one call covers all of it.
Your Business Has an Irrigation System, Boiler, or Commercial Equipment Connected to the Water Supply
Any connection between the public water supply and a potential source of contamination, irrigation systems, boilers, fire suppression systems, commercial food equipment, chemical dispensers, requires a backflow prevention device to be installed and tested annually. If your property has these connections and no device is in place, you may be out of compliance without knowing it.
You're Purchasing or Selling a Commercial Property
Backflow preventer compliance is a common item flagged during commercial property due diligence. Buyers want to know devices are tested and current. Sellers want to close without a compliance issue slowing the transaction. Northeast Plumbing can test existing devices quickly, provide documentation, and install new devices when needed to clear a compliance issue before closing.
Your Backflow Device Failed Its Last Test
A backflow preventer that fails its annual test needs to be repaired or replaced before it can be certified. A failed device means your property is currently unprotected, contaminated water could flow back into the supply line if a pressure drop occurs. Northeast Plumbing repairs and replaces failed devices and retests to confirm compliance before filing the results.
You're Not Sure If Your Property Has a Backflow Device or When It Was Last Tested
Many property owners, especially those who recently purchased a commercial building or older home with irrigation, don’t know whether a backflow preventer exists on their property or when it was last certified. We assess the full connection points on your property, identify what’s present, test what needs to be tested, and get you into compliance with a clear record going forward.

What Backflow Prevention Actually Does and Why It's Required
Under normal conditions, water pressure keeps your supply water flowing in one direction, from the municipal main, through your meter, and into your building. Backflow happens when that pressure is disrupted, a water main break, high demand on the system, a pump failure, and water reverses direction. If a contaminated source is connected to the supply line without protection, that contaminated water can be drawn back into the public supply.
Backflow prevention devices are mechanical assemblies that allow water to flow in one direction only. They’re required on any connection that poses a cross-contamination risk; irrigation systems that spray fertilizer or pesticide near supply connections, boiler systems that use chemical treatments, commercial food and beverage equipment, fire suppression systems, and others depending on the hazard level. Most municipalities require these devices to be tested annually by a certified tester to confirm the check valves and seals are still functioning correctly. Devices that aren’t tested regularly can degrade and fail without any visible sign, until a backflow event actually occurs.
Northeast Plumbing is certified to test and repair backflow prevention devices across the Greater Cleveland area. We test to ASSE (American Society of Sanitary Engineering) standards, provide written test reports, and file results directly with your municipality so compliance doesn’t become another item on your to-do list. When a device fails its test, we diagnose whether repair or replacement is the right path, provide upfront pricing, and retest once the work is complete. If you’re not sure where your device is, whether you have one, or when it was last certified, we start there, a site walk to inventory your connections and confirm compliance status before anything else.

Backflow Testing FAQs
Who is required to have backflow testing done?
Any property with a backflow prevention device installed is typically required to have it tested annually. This includes most commercial properties, properties with irrigation systems, buildings with boilers or fire suppression, and some residential properties with specific cross-connection risks. If you’ve received a notice from your municipality, compliance is required. If you’re unsure whether your property has a device or is subject to testing requirements, we can assess and advise.
How long does backflow testing take?
Most backflow tests take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the type and number of devices on the property. We’ll give you a realistic time estimate when you schedule. For commercial properties with multiple devices, we can assess the full scope during scheduling and provide a timeline accordingly.
What happens if my backflow preventer fails the test?
A failed test means the device is no longer providing adequate protection and cannot be certified in its current condition. We diagnose the specific failure, worn seals, failed check valves, corroded components, and give you upfront pricing for repair or replacement. Once repaired, we retest and file the passing results with the city. We do not file failing results; the device needs to be back in working order before compliance documentation is submitted.
Do you file the test results with the city?
Yes. After a successful test, we complete and submit the required test report to your municipality directly. You receive a copy for your records. You don’t need to navigate the filing process yourself, that’s included in the service.
How much does backflow testing cost?
We provide upfront flat-rate pricing for backflow testing before any work begins. Cost varies based on device type and location. If a repair or replacement is needed after a failed test, we provide a separate quote for that work before proceeding.
