Greater Cleveland's Trusted Plumber

Residential Plumbing In Shaker Heights

Shaker Heights homes are some of the best built in Northeast Ohio. Brick Colonials, Georgians, and Tudors line streets that were planned down to the setbacks, and two-family homes were designed to look like grand single houses. Nearly a century later, the architecture still holds up, but the plumbing behind the plaster often doesn’t. Northeast Plumbing & Mechanical helps Shaker Heights homeowners keep that plumbing reliable without compromising the homes themselves, and you’ll get a flat-rate price before any work begins.

What's Behind the Plaster

Most Shaker Heights homes were built between the 1910s and the 1950s, and many still have a mix of original and updated plumbing. Galvanized steel water lines are the most common problem we see: they corrode from the inside, so water pressure fades first on the second and third floors and rusty water shows up at the tap. Cast iron drain stacks run from the basement to the roof inside the walls and eventually crack or rust through, while the clay sewer lateral under the front lawn has had decades for the city’s mature trees to send roots into its joints. Add original gate valves that seize when you need them and a few generations of patchwork repairs, and you have a system that’s worth understanding before it fails.

We start by looking at the whole system, from the water service and main shut-off in the basement to the upstairs bathrooms and the sewer line to the street. Then we explain what’s in good shape, what’s wearing out, and what can wait, so you can plan repairs on your terms instead of in an emergency.

Repiping Without Disturbing Your Home

Replacing old galvanized supply lines with copper or PEX is one of the best upgrades you can make to an older Shaker Heights home. It restores strong, even water pressure on every floor and ends the cycle of pinhole leaks. Because these homes have plaster walls, original woodwork, and finishes worth protecting, we plan every repipe around them. We trace existing routes first, use basements, closets, and existing chases wherever we can, keep any wall openings small and in the least visible places, and cover floors and furnishings before we start. If you’d rather spread the cost and disruption out, we can repipe in phases, one floor or one line at a time.

Shaker Doubles & Rental Homes

Shaker Heights is known for its two-family homes, many designed to look like a single large house from the street. Inside, each unit usually has its own fixtures and water heater, but the units often share a drain stack, a sewer line, and sometimes a water service. A clog or leak in one unit can quickly become a problem for both. We trace issues across the whole building, add separate shut-offs so one unit can be worked on without disturbing the other, coordinate access with tenants, and provide written documentation for owners. With about a third of Shaker Heights homes rented, we’re used to working with landlords who need dependable, well-documented service.

Thanks so much for your wonderful service!

This place is great – In and out quickly, and the technicians, Dale and Chase, were respectful, exceptionally kind and even really funny too. They created a safe and welcoming environment and explained everything very simply, in a way that was easy to understand. I would definitely use this company again, as this was a great experience. They even squeezed us in for a same day appointment, which was great. You guys are the best – Thanks so much for your wonderful service!
